The Waters of Chernobyl
BRIEF
Design for an infrastructure in Chernobyl, Ukraine.
ABSTRACT
My infrastructure of control for this studio is the Water of Chernobyl. In my studies, I looked at the effects of the Reactor 4 meltdown on April 26, 1986 in Chernobyl on the waterways, wetlands, and aquatic life in the areas between the Baltic and Black sea. Alongside traditional water networks like rivers and lakes, I also looked at the wind, precipitation, and plume on the day of the catastrophe.
My interposition idea for this studio utilizes a series of low tech, steel frame towers to geoengineer the intersection between the Pripyat River and the Chernobyl exclusion zone: SATURATOR 01 & 02. I will be inducing a floodplain throughout this region in order to saturate the water in the area with the abundance of caesium that exists in the local soil beds.
